Mandy is never one to let the grass grow under my feet so today we finished off the huge task of getting the entire PMP DVD sales stock refreshed, replacing any damaged covers, filling gaps, cleaning the plastic boxes - we carried on right through to the end with all our recent DVD releases added to stock which puts us ready for the first events of the year amongst which will be the annual Boyle St, Manchester Spring Festival and of course that's where we normally finish the rally year as well. Our commitment to such events has spanned the decades and having started by selling a few photos at the PSV meetings which moved to the meeting room at Boyle St ( now the cafe) we also started advertising in Ian Allans Buses magazine. Martin had some old Buses magazines from the 1970s on the Bangladesh trip, he rereads them and discards them to bewildered room lads, anyway it was fun to see some of our earliest adverts under the classified section, of course Buses is no longer with Ian Allan having moved to Key Publishing, meanwhile PMP just carries on from strength to strength cementing world wide relationships with like minded enthusiasts which carry on through decades and if we can find a way hopefully for many centuries after we have been turning up the daisies. I managed to sleep well, I finally gave up the battle with sleep at 7.30 pm last night and didn't wake until about 6am, I finally got up at 7 but let Mandy sleep on, I cracked on with some of the sorting as I started to go through the rest of the video content. The first few films have now come off the production line and even the covers made and listed on our sire web shop, see store pages. This includes Dubai and the first two volumes on Dhaka. The master for Chittagong buses is burning right now. Next off the line will be a volume of trucks in Bangladesh which pretty well centres on our visit to the road to Dhaka from the Chittagong docks. This road has seen many of the worst of the atrocities committed during the violence which marred the first months of this year. The fire bomb seemed to be the weapon of choice plus loosening the rail tracks to send the trains lurching into the embankments and more death and destruction. Reviewing the films the absolute traffic chaos is very evident, the mix of buses and other traffic and the poor pedestrians who take their life in their hands crossing the roads brought back the noise and constant tooting. It was perhaps already relaxing in the exec lounges at Kolkata and Dubai to enjoy a sense of order and even the roar of the rolls royce aircraft engines seems slightly subdued this time round. The morning came sharp and sunny today and as the frost melted the spring flowers shone in the sunshine. It was similarly satisfying to go along to St Oswalds this morning and celebrate the freedoms we hold dear. It was strange in Bangladesh as you noticed that women are almost absent from all scenes of street life or interactions in shops, hotels, transport etc. Although very much the lands of smiles it shouldn't be forgotten that this sometimes volatile country which is presently committed to peacefully following it's mainstream faith can suddenly lurch in any direction. With so many problems it is a wonder that it's politicians play foot loose with human life and seek to destroy a fragile economy in a land where the majority of children either work in industry or live the life of street urchins or worse. In a time when our freedom is so often challenged it is perhaps sad that Britain seems to be going in the wrong direction and our liberties sometimes dating back under common laws a thousand years are so glibly thrown aside, when we are challenged by dark forces from within such as UKIP or those from without we need to stay united but we should also have the freedom to express our feeling which of course we are presently banned from doing so. Tonights photo selection from our first day in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Mandy picked me up at Manchester airport this morning at 7am after the night flight home from Calcutta via Dubai, I must have slept a bit and so far have made it through the day and hopefully will be able to get my body clock adjusted before work on Monday. I've given Mandy a quick run through of the trip photos flicking fast past the transport shots as I know she wanted to see the Rocket boat trip etc. Everything seems to have come out very well, I'm just downloading the last of the films from the trip. I heard from Hasan in Bangladesh our facilitator there who was as excited as ever especially with the jaunt behind us. The trip did start in Dubai where tourists are allowed one bus shot as a souvenir and nothing more as it's government buses and this was the place where the monorail went over the embryonic palm tree development at great cost, passing over the expansive building site and issues souvenir tickets which are demanded back when your journey ends. An outragious place Dubai and offering sun, warmth, sea and sand, and sun etc plus lots of very tall buildings. The tramway way was particularly amusing as it more or less ran from nowhere special to nowhere in particular past lots of hotels which also have open top tour buses to take you past other peoples hotels and more tall buildings. The tall building are also connected more earnestly by an automated metro which is almost like an attraction at Alton Towers ( not speaking from experience). This is quite handy as being automated there is no-one to moan that you have enjoyed filming the experience although almost everyone does. Dubai has other things besides tall buildings and hotels and also has grotty migrant areas where asian workers are crammed into bunk bedrooms 10 to a room or more. It was down this end we pitched up handy for the bus station where you can't take photos, remember you can only take pictures of a building site at great expense. Despite this the drivers were as ever really great and had no bother at all, in fact the bus and tram drivers liked posing for pictures, so good on you folks and shame that Dubai is just another of those places where everyone has to be nice about which actually is just a nasty little dictatorship which the west must suck up to for oil supplies. I'll edit down the whole experience and give one long super length 90 minute DVD. It hasn't been that busy with DVD order although as soon as Mandy and Sue head off to South Africa later this week I'm sure I'll get inundated. A few models arrived in the post but no chance to look them over, we spent this morning carrying on the mammoth task Mandy started with the rally DVD stock, replacing sun damaged cases, cleaning out the boxes and filling any gaps where DVDs are missing from stock. Lets see what Dubai had to offer them! I've already edited Dubai and it should have a trailer on Youtube by tomorrow. By the way we flew through the 15M hit mark whilst away and the second and third viewing nations on Youtube are now Poland and Vietnam with USA on fourth place. well after a lot of effort last night's blog see!ingly banished after about twenty minutes typing it our to post. yesterday we were at the airport railway station before 8.30 and then found we were going to be several hours late setting off and that the concept of device means lots of smiles and then confusion. the great advantage well really the only one is tuebwifi allows me to catch up with TV at home in the UK. what with the terrorists in Bangladesh and railway conteucr work it all conspired against us and needless to say on a visit of eurpeon countries it alone retains the necessity to the!I've the ROMs peolloe.
the train journey was a bit boucy but before bonfire booms in siti. TT he train ride but self was seven hours late and took us into darkness as the light was gradually fading. its been really easy to get around without instruction and it is looking like.we actually hsdvs drinf of or age which break bittlesvofvxbeer we ghave cibcude.yokes tongin quite easily. it was a night disturbed b.y the roaring nightime evobkets asvtjey only had baggage. so much to do we tvee found ourselves in wanhrsworh the jail.we hit the time at tea time and has little recourse with such sources, the local hotels are all quire grim. I was going to get to bed a not earlier goodness knows we need the sleep but after a bit of pre loading we were at the peninsula hotel and enjoyed their buffet and a couple of beers on our second night..quite close recourse to civilisation which will welcome bit. hotel and landscapes natural as any thing which will go on soon. well another busy day and our homewards leg commences.Bangladesh is not for the faint of heart, really a strictly global travellers choice of destination. certainly the food is not so good outside of the five star Weston etc chain groups. we had a car to the border, certainly from what we saw the Indian buses are all sat on their side of the border, would you believe the hartal finishes tonight but the transport blockade goes on.
it really is bliss to have a yummy meal with am English buffet. let's go back to this morning, we had a car to the border as our guide was worried about us plus the trans border services really weren't working as we saw the Indian buses sat on their side of the line. we really put the border guards out as westerners in general seemed pretty rare and after four minutes of studying they'd still ask you by our nationality. lots of s!miles on Bangladesh side as ever,Indians a not more gruff.chaotic situation score failed on both sides, actually Bangladesh seemed more professional than India.s arrangements. we got a ruk tuk to benole or whatever they calls it on the indiannside amf headed for the buses but they see!ed pretty rough so wevdeclimed and headed to the commuter elective at the railway station. wed left our guide has an behind sonhw could start his journey back to Dhaka. a!acing that the hartal finishes as we depart. we got a suburban electric train which took pretty well into the city centre which just left is with a short hop to the railway station and wothnalk the commotion it was still a fair bit to tjebstation! .!,the train was waiting and leftvalmost on time. there were a l the usual hawkers plus a kareoke guy who really fancied himself. never felt so clean as to after a doak in the bath here. tomorrow we start to work our way around and I realised tonight that my knees hadn't been playing up at all since in seemed to strain something under my knee, falling asleep now, goodnight Dave,............ well after a very rough night I did at least feel almost human this morning,I took a couple of bunger up pills and although stomach cramps came in waves I'm not that bad and did manage a nearly full day out filming just trying to get my fluid levels back up. checked my messages tonight and I've heard from Brian Hyde who is George Hyde's son ,George was my dads band master in the ta Sussex yeomanry band post war, it is really grand as Eddie kerins son and I have met and exchanged photos and hopefully well be able to share more with Brian, that's three of the sons of the band in touch now, what a strange place to pick up on it whilst in Bangladesh.
feeling a bit dusty and tired I'm looking forwards to a trio of nights in luxury at the oberoi in kalkota or Calcutta as even the BBC write it still. I had a huffed reply on a blog to my remarks on Scotland,if anyone has visited ,filmed, compiled archives etc more than me south of the border let them make themselves known. after being attacked and insulted many times in Scotland I make no apologies plus I now face a court case under writes Scottish law for taking film of a bus driver which seems to tie in with the racial abuse I got from the police in Glasgow at the games. the chap concerned said I was still happy to take his money, I've news for him he can go elsewhere with my best wishes if we cannot express our genuine feelings after suffering what can we do,I've masses of friends in Scotland and was amongst the first to support the main rallies and running days from England and encouraged many enthusiasts to make their first visits to lathalmond and svvt. perhaps I'll postpone my planned trip to the Orkneys and outer Hebrides to next year as a form of protest. today we went to the Khulna bus station, hot sunny and dusty yet again not a lot of action early on as the hartals and blockade with yet more deaths yesterday put people off travelling around the country. we then went to the railway station, broad guage and at first glance not a lot going on its near the river station where the rocket ferries once moored. then things started to hot up and got two trains and lots of shunting movements recorded. in the afternoon we went to a junction way out of the city where traffic from the capital heads south to the second port plus Khulna third city. I went to the bank to get Indian rupees ,well money changer really,I thought the rate was good, this afternoon I found it wall all Bangladesh taka, has an the guide had a piece of our minds,he keeps butting in when you ate trying to sort stuff out,we've a car to take us to the border,he was scared of travelling by bus,in the event we are thinking of ditching him at Khulna and doing the border on our own it can't be that difficult. well have yo get some rupees at the border and then need to find a decent Indian bus to kolkota esplanade bus station which is onlyba few minutes walk across to the oberoi hotel. spending the evening in Khulna on the toilet,I seem to have been a bit too complacent about what to eat and let it get the better of me on the rocket paddle steamer. to be truyhfull there wasn't anything I really liked and should have just stuck to water but even the bottle they left in the room was already opened and filled with goodness knows what . I'd been enjoying the trip up to this point and quite chuffed that all was well on that front but I'd been very particular where and what we ate.
we got on the rocket on Saturday evening wed tried to locate the university bus company depot and main bus hub at Curzon hall in Dhaka but it was the ,off, day most things have an off day, buses, trains, boats,it let's them catch up eoyh their schedules when everything has gone just too far long such as the seven hour train delays,it was frustrating with the buses as it turned out to be a great areas for the brtc double deckers and the university buses have Mandy ex brtc older models in service wrd seen a few on farm gate a busy thoroughfare. excuse more mistakes than usual I'm burning up and sat on the you know where with the toilet roll running out and in a fever. I'd have a shower if I could feel comfortable for a few minutes. the rocket departure was that late and was the usual chaos, lots of security standing around doing nothing while all sorts of people were leaping onto the ship unchallenged and obviously ticketless. we had s meal on board goodness help us but it was pretty grim I mainly had rice which was apparently well cooked. the boat is from 1929 and I think it has just been let to deterorate over the years and at least the ostrich we were on needs some tender care and attention. the engines were converted to diesel as late as 1993 ish, it was built in Calcutta. just found the spateloo roll, the fever is dying down a bit now tummy just sore more than anything,I'll be extra careful now just stick to bananas and bottled water and I should be safe until we get yo the oberoi in Calcutta where everything is cooked in safe water. the journey itself is very relaxing, we were disappointed to find that there would be no rocket ship to pass on its return mid way as it was that wretched off day from the other end then previous day. getting shots of the boat when on board is obviously impossible although martin was very quick to spot a rocket heading in to berth before we left Dhaka and we got shots of that. at the end of the journey we had a small launch to take us across the river to the ambulance which had been booked to take us on yo Khulna the regional capital. the hotel here is OK enough it even has a swimming pool but no water and a bar with no well you are probably in front of me,actually cans of heinejin which would pitch it at about eight quid a pint. the nar is seedy and dark and we have already decoded to pass on it as we have our own supplies,I've obviously noe retired injured from dining so martin has gone down on his own but we did have a gin and lemojdae before I succumbed. the internet didn't work at first but their chap came up to our rooms and sorted,no ideas what the problem was but it seems a strong signal,I'm probably too tired to do much listening to radio from UK or trying YouTube for the sospd but I'll give it a go. I dlrpy very little on board last night, this hotel seems to be not so noisey as others and there is some give in the mattress thank goodness. we need to get our route out sorted tomorrow over to India as its obviously difficult with the blockade on and the hartals back again, many people are just too terrified tontravle and some of the carriers don't want to risk their buses. thousands of Indian truck are reported to be stranded at the boarder scared to enter the country. |
