life in cubs usually ends up in frustration but at nearly 5 quid an hour for WiFi and still can't get a connection the young girls on the business desk turn their attention to note important things like their nails, thank goodness the world ignored our youthful attempts at communism back in the sixties as we could all still be driving around in horse carts and mowing with a scythe . ecological may all that be of course, last time I was here at Santiago the service was pretty rubbish five years on it hadn't improved, breakfast was a wilderness of empty serveries with still an hour to go. anyway the weather has been a scorcher on this Sunday,I did do a couple of hours over the road as a side trip from poolside all day, its in the 90s all week according to the BBC,I must catch up on the news only CNN on tellie here,China has edged out the world device from blighty.
the trip afterwe left Trinidad was only a short run but long faces on the drivers faces as we wanted to go via Santa Clara which was only about forty miles to the north, a large city well worth visiting and at one stage it had half a dozen camellos at the bus station plus lots of guaguas. then it was back to sancti spiritus a smaller city and not too bad a hotel very colonial style. I can't recall the bus scene as its already slipped from my memory but next came camaguey which had a couple of full ex havana camellos in service we even found the depot but it was empty. there was a pretty hectic railway scene there, whilst not something I concentrate on I did as much when I saw anything haprning which included the small diesel shuttle at Trinidad which is cut off from the main system, the next day I saw a deisrl tourist train with a couple of carriages behind a larger loco. camaquey was busy most of the time, overmanned needless to day but I did meet the only other enthusiast on the expefition so far. tomorrow is our last full day in Santiago I'll be busy all day down at the docks filming which will capture the latter days of a transport scene which is sure to unravel and give way to Chinese stuff before too long. the next day I'll have a full morning here and then we fly back west to the capital Havana, having the last of the twigleys tonight!
